644 - Introduction to Symbolic Mathematical Computations

An introduction to symbolic algebraic computation systems and some of the more basic algorithms of symbolic mathematics. The symbolic mathematics language "Mathematica" is introduced and used. Topics examined in the course are:
Computer algebra systems, Introduction to Mathematica, Representation of symbolic expressions, Numerical calculations, Symbolic calculations, Basic Mathematica functions, Lists, Patterns and transformational rules, Input/Output and files, User defined functions and routines, Selection and iteration structures, Programming in Mathematica, Graphics, Factorization, Solution of equations and systems, Differentiation, Integration, Series manipulation, Linear algebra problems, Basic computer algebra algorithms. Laboratory in Mathematica.
